Millings driveways, San Antonio
Millings drives on San Antonio ground
Millings are old asphalt ground up when roads are resurfaced. San Antonio has local millings suppliers, and millings make a firm, dark drive that holds together better than loose gravel.
Millings suit the long drives to homes on acreage on the northwest side and in the ETJ, ranchette roads, and parking areas at barns and shops.
Highlander Construction is based next door in Helotes and serves San Antonio. Call and tell us about your drive.

Millings drives in San Antonio
How thick
A San Antonio millings supplier gives 3 to 4 inches of millings over a stable base for driveways, 4 to 6 inches for heavy ranch roads, and compaction with a roller (O'Leary Development Group). We size the depth to your traffic and base.
The base does the work
On the limestone northwest side, the base may be rocky and firm. On clay ground further south it may need more work to stay dry. Either way, the subgrade is graded, crowned and compacted before millings go on.
Impervious cover over the recharge zone
If your lot is over the Edwards recharge zone inside the city or ETJ, SAWS limits impervious cover (SAWS Ordinance 81491). Ask the city how your drive surface is counted before you plan a big drive or parking area.
Water off the drive
A crown, a shaped edge and a pipe where the drive crosses a ditch or draw keep the drive from washing. See road drainage.
Questions
Millings driveways questions: San Antonio
How thick should a millings driveway be?
A San Antonio supplier gives 3 to 4 inches over a stable base for driveways and 4 to 6 inches for heavy ranch roads, compacted with a roller.
Do millings count as impervious cover?
Ask the city or SAWS how your surface is counted if you are over the recharge zone. We do not make that call.
Millings or caliche for my drive?
Millings pack into a firmer, darker surface. Caliche is lighter and needs good drainage. See the comparison guide.
