Land clearing, Helotes
Clearing land around Helotes
The land around Helotes is cedar and oak country cut by Helotes Creek, right where the creek leaves the Hill Country. Most clearing here is for homesites on acreage, or for opening up land that has gone to cedar.
Two local things change how it is done: the City of Helotes tree permit, which needs a tree survey, and the creek itself, which feeds the Edwards Aquifer.
Being local means we know the ground and the offices. Call and tell us about your land.

What changes in Helotes
The tree survey
The City of Helotes tree removal application asks for "a complete tree survey that shows the location, diameter, and name of all protected and heritage trees." The form lists a fee and up to 10 business days to process, and Development Services can be reached at 210-695-5901 (City of Helotes). Survey first, then clear.
City or ETJ?
The Helotes form mentions both the city and its ETJ, but also says to submit it only for projects in the city's jurisdiction. Land just outside Helotes may fall in San Antonio's ETJ instead, where San Antonio's own tree ordinance applies (City of San Antonio). Call the city to confirm which applies to your lot.
Helotes Creek
The Helotes Creek watershed sits on the Edwards contributing zone and supplies up to 15 percent of the aquifer's recharge (Texas Public Radio). On the contributing zone, TCEQ's rules apply when more than five acres are disturbed, with erosion controls in first (TCEQ RG-11). Clearing that leaves the soil in place is lighter on the creek.
Brush near town
Inside city limits, brush is hauled unless the city allows burning (AgriLife). Outside town, the TCEQ conditions and any Bexar County ban apply. Check the burn ban map.
