Local know-how

What to know before land work in Medina

Rules, ground and timing that change how the work is done here. Sources are linked.

01

Cedar on steep ground

Steep canyons with tall, mature cedar mixed with oaks are the kind of place the endangered golden-cheeked warbler nests (TPWD and USFWS). Regrowth cedar is almost never its habitat (TPWD), but if your land has old cedar on steep slopes, check with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service before clearing.

02

Roads on rough ground

Steep ranch roads need a careful line, a crown and water turned off often, or they wash. See ranch roads.

03

Stock and wildlife water

A tank sited for runoff and checked for soil. See stock tanks in Bandera County.

04

Burn ban

With the Bandera County ban in effect from August 27, 2026, brush piles wait or get hauled (News 4 San Antonio).

Nearby

Do I need to worry about the golden-cheeked warbler?

If your land has tall, mature cedar mixed with oaks on steep slopes, possibly. Only habitat the birds actually use is protected, and USFWS has the final say. Regrowth cedar is almost never habitat.

Can I burn brush near Medina?

Not while the Bandera County burn ban is in effect. Check the Texas A&M Forest Service map for today's status.

Do you build roads on steep ranch land?

Yes. Steep roads need a careful line and frequent turnouts for water. We look at the ground first.
