Working in Canyon Lake

Land work in Canyon Lake

Canyon Lake is a big place, close to 157 square miles, and it added nearly 10,000 people in ten years. Many of them build on Hill Country lots that need a pad and a drive before anything else.

Many lots here are on slopes. A good pad on a slope is cut and filled to plan, compacted and drained, and a drive up a hill needs a surface and a crown that keep the rain from carving it out.

Highlander Construction serves Canyon Lake and Comal County. Call and tell us about your lot.

Local know-how

What to know before land work in Canyon Lake

Rules, ground and timing that change how the work is done here. Sources are linked.

01

Building on a slope

On sloped lots the pad is part cut, part fill. The fill is placed and compacted in layers so it does not settle, and the ground around it is shaped so water goes around the house, not under it. See building pads.

02

Drives that hold on a grade

Millings pack into a firm surface that holds up on slopes, and caliche and base work too with a good crown and a way off for the water. See driveways.

03

Cedar around the house

Selective cedar clearing opens up the lot and the view while keeping shade and privacy. See cedar clearing.

04

Edwards rules

Comal County is on TCEQ's Edwards list, so check whether your lot sits on a regulated zone before a big pad or drive (TCEQ).

Nearby

Can you cut a pad into a sloped lot?

Yes. Sloped lots get a cut and fill pad, compacted in layers and graded so water runs around the building.

Which drive surface works on a hill?

Millings pack into a firm surface that holds up on slopes. Caliche and base also work with a good crown. The drainage matters most.

Do the Edwards rules apply around Canyon Lake?

Comal County is covered by TCEQ's Edwards rules. It depends on your lot's zone and the work. TCEQ's San Antonio office can confirm.
