Ranch cedar in Bandera County
Bandera County sits on the Edwards Plateau, with the Hill Country State Natural Area in its hills (Wikipedia). Cedar is the main thing standing between a lot of this land and good grass.
On a working ranch or a hunting place, cedar clearing is about balance: enough open ground for grass and visibility, enough cover for deer and birds, and the oaks left alone.

Cedar clearing in Bandera County
Know your juniper
Ashe juniper does not resprout from its roots once cut. Redberry juniper, more common farther west, does (TPWD Appendix E). The species on your land changes how it is cleared and how often it needs a follow-up.
Steep, old cedar: check first
The golden-cheeked warbler nests in tall, mature Ashe juniper mixed with oaks on steep slopes, with nest trees generally 15 feet or taller (TPWD and USFWS). Regrowth cedar is almost never its habitat (TPWD). Old cedar on steep canyon slopes is worth a call to USFWS before clearing.
Cost-share
Brush Management (practice 314) is an NRCS conservation practice (NRCS). EQIP starts with an NRCS planner's visit and pays after the work meets NRCS standards (NRCS EQIP). See the EQIP guide.
The burn ban
With a Bandera County burn ban in effect from August 27, 2026 (News 4 San Antonio), cleared cedar is stacked for a later burn or hauled.
Questions
Cedar clearing questions: Bandera
Is all cedar the same?
No. Ashe juniper does not resprout from the roots after cutting. Redberry juniper does, so it needs different follow-up.
Can I clear cedar if warblers might be on my land?
Only habitat the birds actually use is protected, and USFWS has the final say. Regrowth cedar is almost never habitat. Tall, old cedar on steep slopes is worth checking first.
Can EQIP help pay for cedar clearing?
Possibly, through Brush Management (practice 314). It starts at your local USDA Service Center with an NRCS planner.
