Cedar clearing, Boerne

Cedar on the Kendall County plateau

Kendall County is on the Edwards Plateau (Wikipedia), and much of its land has gone to Ashe juniper. On a homesite that means no view and no grass. On a bigger place it means pasture lost and land harder to use.

Clearing cedar well around Boerne is about what stays: the live oaks, the shade, the screening from the neighbors, and the cover the deer use.

Cedar clearing near Boerne

01

Homesites: thin, do not strip

On a homesite, cedar is often thinned rather than cleared, opening views and grass while keeping privacy screens and shade. Ashe juniper does not resprout from its roots once cut (TPWD Appendix E), so a thinned stand stays thinned, apart from new seedlings.

02

Bigger places: clear for wildlife

If the land is run for wildlife, TPWD suggests clearing 50 percent or less of the brush and keeping strips connected (TPWD). Clearings of 40 acres or less suit deer best in the AgriLife study (AgriLife).

03

Valuation questions

Brush management is a habitat practice in TPWD's wildlife guidelines, and minimum tract sizes are set county by county by the appraisal district (TPWD). Your plan and the Kendall County appraisal district decide what counts. See the valuation guide.

04

Burning in Kendall County

Burn bans are set by the county, which lifted one in January 2026 (Community Impact). Check the burn ban map before a burn.

Will cedar grow back after clearing?

Cut Ashe juniper does not resprout from the stump. New seedlings come up over the years, so a light follow-up keeps the land open.

Can you thin cedar but keep my privacy?

Yes. Screens and cover are marked first and left standing.

Does cedar clearing count for my wildlife valuation?

Brush management is one of TPWD's habitat practices, but your plan and the appraisal district decide. We cannot promise a tax result.
